Chess originated from an indian game called chaturanga and spread accross Eurasia aroudn 600AD. By 16th
century, the game evolved into the modern day version of chess that we know today. accross different
versions of the game, different pieces of the game had different names and moves, i.e., in old indian
version of chess, elephant or the bishop could only move two squares sideways or front-and-back at a time
but could jump over a piece in between.
Rules of the game
The game can be very challenging to a beginner so here are some rules on how to play...
Players take turn in the game. The turns cannot be skipped and a piece must be moved each turn.
Pieces cannot jump over other pieces without capturing them(for other colour)
To capture a piece must land on the same square as the other piece. Then, the pre-existing piece is
removed.
Every kind of piece has its owb secific way to move and it must be followed.
Check: When a player is in a situation to capture the opponent's king in the next move, they announce
'check'
Checkmate: after announcing check, the opponent has a chance to move the king or block the capturing in
one move. If the opponent's king ends up being in a state where the capture is unavoidable or not
blocked, 'checkmate' is announced signifying a win.
The rules might still be a little confusing, so here is a short video for the visual learners.
